Course Description:

Video games have become an invaluable resource in the toolkit of therapists. Just as science and technology have revolutionized therapy, the world of play and gaming has transformed the way we engage in play. Video games open up a whole new realm of play that has shaped our communities, our play styles, and our interaction with this medium as an art form.

This course explores the many facets of video gaming, including mechanics, themes, culture, and community, empowering therapists to harness their clients' love for gaming in the therapeutic process.

Whether you're a novice or a seasoned gamer, this course will provide you with a powerful framework for understanding games and gaming culture as a tool for play therapy.

Objectives:

1. Describe the essential terms that define the impact of video games and gaming culture on individuals today.

2. Recognize the unique language of gaming and its significance in enhancing communication with clients who connect with gaming on a personal level.

3. Discuss current controversies in play therapy, such as video game addiction and the portrayal of violence in games, while also examining the role of gaming as a form of escapism.

4. Assess the similarities between digital play and other forms of play, and elaborate on how video games can harness the therapeutic powers of play.

5. Analyze how different video game genres are centered around specific mechanics, and how individuals can benefit from incorporating these mechanics into therapeutic practices.

6. Recognize how the narratives and themes in video games can be relevant to a client's mental health journey, and how these elements can be integrated into play therapy.

7. Demonstrate the skill of analyzing a client's gaming preferences to identify themes, narratives, and concepts that can be utilized throughout the therapeutic process effectively.
