Program Description:

Tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs, or just RPGs) are rapidly taking their place at the play-therapy table, proving both wonderfully engaging to clients who might otherwise struggle to persevere with the therapeutic process, and excitingly effective at challenging various presenting issues.

Their use is compatible with most theoretical modalities, especially play- therapy (the 'P' in RPG standing for 'play', after all), and provides practitioners with an incredibly versatile tool with which to help their clients.

This workshop will explore the efficacy of RPGs within a therapeutic setting, and walk participants through the processes and considerations required to implement RPGs as part of their play-therapy provision.

By the workshop's completion, participants will have a thorough knowledge of the fundamental tenets of collaborative storytelling, be able to use various game mechanics to inform their clients' play-therapy, and have access to further avenues of learning, should they wish to pursue them.

A significant obstacle to utilizing RPGs as part of one's practice is in terms of confidence: the belief that one doesn't possess sufficient imagination/creativity to utilize such an unconventional approach. This workshop will help participants realise that they actually do possess the necessary skills to work with RPGs effectively, and will demonstrate how to tap into those creative inner-reserves.

Instructor(s)

Daniel Hand

Daniel Hand grew up a child of the British military, and, like many forces brats, learned at a young age that imagination can be a comforting source of stability in a volatile world. His first experience with RPGs was a play-by-post writing exercise, in which he played a villainous mercenary bent on keeping an Evil-with-a-capital-'E' conspiracy under wraps—a character who subsequently became the protagonist of his first published story. A couple of decades, dozens of publications, and countless dice-fuelled adventures later, he is now a counsellor who uses RPGs (and stories more generally) to help struggling individuals battle their inner demons by swinging swords at imaginary ones. A proud Friend of both the Burma Star Association and the Parachute Regiment Association, he's still writing war stories, and still rolling the dice.
