Let’s Play Therapy Institute is an APT Approved Provider 20-609. This program has been approved for 3.0 APT Non-Contact CE hours . Play therapy credit may not be awarded to non-mental health professionals. Courses that do not qualify for play therapy credit are clearly listed.

It is the responsibility of each professional to check with their state or national licensing board to obtain continuing education credit for this seminar. Most state and national licensing boards will approve continuing education courses which cover clinical topics, practice management skills, legal and ethical responsibilities, and stress management. This program is a 3.0-hour recorded training on using Dungeons & Dragons in play therapy.

Handouts are provided to follow along with the recorded training. 

It is expected that you will complete the entire training and not skip over any parts of this training. There is an evaluation and post-test at the end of the training.

Course Description:

Dungeons and Dragons is a tabletop role-playing game that can be used in both individual and group play therapy sessions. 

Join Erika Walker and JD Dreiling as they give you a rundown of the history of D&D, examples of how it fits with historically significant play therapy theories, and show how it works within the framework of Adlerian Play Therapy specifically.

Please Note: This course will not teach participants how to play D&D. Resources for learning how to play are provided.

Objectives:

  1. Apply D&D to various theoretical perspectives in play therapy.
  2. Discuss the history of D&D.
  3. Identify 3-4 skills clients can develop while using D&D in individual and group play therapy sessions.
  4. Describe to parents and caregivers how D&D can be a useful and powerful intervention in play therapy sessions.
  5. Utilize D&D to meet clients' treatment plan goals.
  6. Discuss the importance of identity and culture in the game of D&D.

Instructor(s)

Erika Walker

Erika Walker is a Licensed Specialist Clinical Social Worker and Licensed Clinical Social Worker (dually licensed in Kansas and Missouri), as well as a Registered Play Therapist. She received her master’s degree in Social Work from Newman University in 2013 and her bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Religious Studies from The University of Kansas in 2006. Erika received her play therapy training from KC Play in 2015, and then obtained her Registered Play Therapist credential in 2016. She provides psychotherapy to families and individuals. Erika specializes in the areas of developmental delays, Autism, trauma, grief and loss, attachment and play therapy for ages 0 to 6, and 18 and up. She also has training on utilizing Dungeons and Dragons in therapy to work on treatment goals. Within her work, Erika utilizes Brainspotting, EMDR®, directive and non-directive play therapy, and AutPlay Therapy®. She also utilizes Theraplay® techniques.

Jacob "JD" Dreiling

Jacob "JD" Dreiling is an Associate Professional Counselor (soon to be fully licensed!) in the state of Georgia, a Play Therapist, and a Certified AutPlay Therapist. He works with children, teens, families, couples, adults, and seniors utilizing experiential techniques to help clients gain insight and become agents of change in their own lives and the world at large. He is a part of the Geek Therapy community, soon to be teaching faculty for the League of Extraordinary Adlerian Play Therapists, serves on committees for the Georgia Association for Play Therapy, and is a trainer in Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training. He and his husband have been playing D&D for sixteen years and he has been facilitating therapeutic D&D for the past year and a half.
