Course Description:

Anime, a style of animation originating from Japan, has gained immense popularity worldwide. It encompasses diverse themes, characters, and storylines that resonate with a broad spectrum of individuals. It is a significant cultural phenomenon, and many clients may have a personal connection to it.

Using anime in play therapy can provide a culturally relevant platform for engagement. Anime characters and scenarios can serve as symbolic representations of clients' emotions and experiences, allowing for indirect expression and exploration of complex feelings. By using anime as a storytelling medium, clients can create and analyze narratives, fostering a deeper understanding of their own life stories.

Participants in this workshop will explore how to implement Anime in narrative play therapy using Anime-themed activities that will encourage creative thinking and imaginative play, allowing clients to explore their inner world more freely.

Objectives:

1. Describe anime, as well as identify its cross-cultural significance.

2. Discuss why understanding this medium constitutes an aspect of cultural humility.

3. Compare and contrast elements of Western vs Japanese culture and how they influence how the medium is received in the west.

4. Assess the role that intersectionality plays in the anime community.

5. Discuss ways to address the subject of anime in the family play therapy session.

6. Discuss the elements that form the basic narrative building blocks in anime.

7. Identify ways to develop narrative play therapy interventions based on specific anime preferences and the client’s personal narrative.
